Play together
Online: 404 Multiplayer & Co-op
Online: 404 is built for solo play or online co-op with a team of up to four players — the same story campaign, the same district, shared. Here is exactly what is confirmed, and the one Steam tag that doesn't fit.

How many players, and doing what?
The developer's framing since the first announcement is "solo or in a team of up to four players", and the Steam feature list matches: single-player, multiplayer, co-op and online co-op are all listed. The game ships with in-game chat, and Steam flags it as having interactive (online) elements.
Two ways to play are presented side by side on the store page:
- Follow the story campaign together — co-op shares the campaign; it is not a separate mode.
- Just mess around together — free-roam the district, scavenge, build and defend as a group.
Survival systems all work in co-op: gathering, crafting, base building and reinforcement, hunting, farming, electricity, vehicle restoration and driving, and defending the base during raids.
The four characters
You pick one of four playable characters, each with unique stats and starting gear. In the June 2026 demo, the roster included Ethan, Wells, Derek and Olivia, with different daily calorie needs, carry weights and starting perks (for example, one started with medical supplies, another with charged batteries, another with stealth takedown experience, another with herbal and mushroom knowledge).
Demo-era detail: those names and numbers come from the June 2026 demo and may change in the Early Access build. What is officially confirmed is the structure — four characters, distinct stats, distinct starting equipment — not the exact values.
In a full squad, complementary picks matter: pairing a stealth-oriented character with a medicine-oriented one covers more of the team's needs than doubling up.
Is Online: 404 an MMO? The "Massively Multiplayer" tag
Steam's genre tags for the game include Massively Multiplayer, sitting right next to a developer-stated four-player cap. Both are on the same store page, and Cornfield Games has never explained the discrepancy — no larger session size, server population or shared-world mode has been described anywhere. The safe reading: confirmed multiplayer is 4-player co-op, and the MMO tag is unreconciled Steam metadata.
Dedicated servers, mods, crossplay
- Dedicated servers: not confirmed. No server browser or hosting guide has been published; third-party server hosts list dedicated servers as not confirmed.
- Mod support: not confirmed. No modding documentation exists.
- Crossplay: not applicable at launch — the game is PC (Steam) only, so everyone in a session is on PC. If console versions are ever announced, crossplay becomes an open question again.
- Local / split-screen co-op: not listed; only online co-op appears in the feature list.
Setting up a squad on day one
- Everyone needs the game on Steam — it is the only storefront.
- Check the system requirements — 16 GB RAM and a 60 GB install are the floor.
- Pick complementary characters instead of four copies of the same build.
- Agree on first-session goals: food, a shelter, and learning the phone tools before deep expeditions. The beginner's guide covers the opening loop.
- Set up a voice channel of your choice for coordination.
